Duck tour!

We went on a duck tour on an Ex WWII amphibious craft:

On land and then into the river! We had a very exciting guide called Harley Davidson!

They are actually called DUKW which signifies:
D - designed in 1942
U - a utility amphibious cargo carrying vessel
K - is for front wheel drive (don't ask why!)
W - double rear axle drive

They were used at Normandy and carried about 40% of all supplies that went ashore. The soldiers nicknamed them ducks. There was 21000 of them built in the war.

They were great fun to ride on but at an average water speed of 6 mph - perhaps the origin of the term sitting duck?
